A 21-year-old Burbank man shot several times during a fight among gang members Saturday night remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not released, was expected to survive his injuries, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Steve Keyser.

The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. in the 14000 block of Foothill Boulevard near Polk Street. Two large groups of people, most believed to be gang members, were fighting in the street outside a row of apartment houses, Keyser said. The argument apparently began over a girl, he said.

The victim was shot several times in the torso, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

When paramedics arrived, the man was in critical condition, gasping for air, he said.

The man was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center after paramedics performed a procedure that allowed him to breathe, Humphrey said.

Two youths, both 17, were also injured in the melee. One suffered a cut on his head. The other suffered what appeared to be a graze wound on his forearm from a bullet, Humphrey said.

A 19-year-old man, whose name was not available, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Keyser said. This man is not suspected of shooting the Burbank man.
