Group Will Discuss Plan to Form City on Westside
The Westside Cityhood Coalition will meet tonight to discuss a proposal to create an independent city that would encompass the neighborhoods of Hollywood, Westwood, Bel-Air, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades, Venice, Westchester and the Los Angeles International Airport.
The proposed municipality, home to 643,000 people, would be called Westside.
“There are a number of reasons for cityhood,” said Dave Tuttle, who drafted the group’s proposal. “The poor level of public services and education, the low level of representation . . . to name of few.”
Thirty people attended the coalition’s first meeting on Nov. 19 and formed five committees: policy, legal, governmental structure, finance and publicity.
“The creation of a new school district will be our main thrust in the first half of 1998,” Tuttle said. “The school district has been providing a very poor level of education. There’s not enough textbooks to go around.”
Tonight, fund-raising strategies will be discussed and there will be a presentation by Stephanie Carter, a leader of the San Fernando Valley’s drive to create a separate school district.
