Foundation Begins Drive to Reopen Pool

The Huntington Beach High School Foundation this week kicked off its “Take the Plunge” campaign aimed at raising $400,000 to reopen the closed campus pool.

“Our goal is to have the pool open for the kids by late 1998,” foundation President Sylvia Garrett said Monday.

The Huntington Beach Union High School District closed the 64-year-old pool in 1991 because of budget cutbacks. The money will be used to renovate and expand the pool for the school’s water polo and swimming teams and for community recreation programs.

School aquatic teams are now bused to other high school pools to practice and compete, water polo and swim team member Laura Fassnacht said.

“This would be great because some students don’t know we have a pool or a swim team,” the sophomore said.

The event netted nearly $3,000 for the foundation, which has raised money for school art, sports and computer equipment in the past. Information: (714) 969-2206.
