Long in Running at New Mexico

Rudy Davilos, New Mexico’s athletic director, and David Mc Kinney, the school’s vice president for business and finance, visited UCLA’s practice Thursday, after which they spoke with Coach Bob Toledo for an endorsement of Bruin defensive coordinator Rocky Long.
Then they spoke with Long about becoming the Lobos’ coach.
Davilos said the list of candidates has been reduced to five, with three interviewed in Dallas on Wednesday and Long on Thursday. Gary Patterson, who is on the New Mexico staff, is also a candidate to replace Dennis Franchione, who is leaving for Texas Christian.
Long has expressed interest in the job at New Mexico, his alma mater, but added, “right now, I’m coming to work at 6:30 in the morning, working all day and making home [recruiting] visits at night. I have a good job.”

An MRI exam showed no ligament tear in the right knee of backup running back Keith Brown, but he is wearing a full leg brace and on crutches.
“The good news is I won’t have to have surgery,” he said.
The bad news is that he will sit out the Cotton Bowl game against Texas A&M.;
