“I’m very focused on the here and now. I have a lot on my plate that comes with this job. [But] if there is anything I’m interested in, it is running for mayor.”

NAME: Laura Chick

AGE: 53

HOME: Tarzana

PROFESSION: Los Angeles City Council member.

LATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Chick easily won reelection to her second--and under term limit laws, last--term representing the West Valley on the Los Angeles City Council. She successfully fought to legalize home businesses in residential zones and pushed through a law to combat teenage truancy by allowing police to issue tickets similar to traffic citations to students who skip school. Chick, once an aide to former City Councilwoman Joy Picus, has expressed an interest in running for mayor someday. Expect to see her try to expand her profile beyond the Valley next year.

GOALS FOR 1998: Chick hopes to open the 500-seat Madrid Theater in May on the site of a former sex-movie house in Canoga Park. She led the effort to get funding for the theater. In addition, the city plans to expand a program begun by Chick in her district that employs neighborhood volunteers to report building and safety violations.
