Area Players Among Best in California

Share

Collegiate Baseball magazine has tabbed four area players as being among the best in California for 1998: Westlake shortstop Scott Dragicevich, Newbury Park outfielder Barry Tolli, Monroe pitcher John Ennis and Camarillo infielder Jay Caliguiri.

SOCCER

In the dark: The Camarillo High boys’ soccer team didn’t end its participation in the Royal tournament Monday on a light note, losing a shootout in the dark.

Scheduled to play Iolani High of Hawaii at 3 p.m., the Scorpions kicked off an hour late because of delays stemming from a girls’ game played on the same field immediately before and the arguments that ensued when a forfeit was awarded.

The boys’ teams tied after a shortened regulation period that ended in the dark. Camarillo Coach Glen Fischer said the players then picked up one goal and carried it more than 500 yards toward a street light and conducted a shootout, won by Iolani, 7-6.

BASKETBALL

Helping out: Ryan Coleman, a guard who last season averaged 23.3 points for the Calabasas High boys’ team, scored five points and had four rebounds Monday night for Cal State Sacramento in the Hornets’ 100-56 loss at Minnesota.

With 27 minutes played, Coleman tied for the team lead in the game, which had an attendance of 13,829. The Hornets are 1-9.
