4.3 Quake Rattles Mammoth Lakes
A magnitude 4.3 earthquake, the strongest in the Mammoth Lakes volcanic earthquake swarm since Nov. 30, struck about noon Monday. It was centered five miles southeast of the Eastern Sierra town, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
Unlike most of the thousands of quakes in the swarm that began in late June, this temblor occurred near Sherwin Lakes, a mile outside the 18-by-12-mile Long Valley caldera, site of a gargantuan eruption 760,000 years ago.
Altogether, there were at least 115 quakes measured Monday in the Mammoth area, most of them too small to be felt.
The 4.3, however, at 12:02 p.m., was felt distinctly at the Mammoth Mountain ski area west of town, and the ski lifts were shut briefly for inspection. No damage was found.
A magnitude 3.0 quake occurred in the same area at 1:42 p.m.
