The Boston Red Sox and the players’ association reached an agreement Tuesday night that would force the team to play or trade Wilfredo Cordero once counselors clear him to return.

Cordero, charged with beating and threatening to kill his current wife, has been on an informal “administrative leave” since Thursday, when the Red Sox learned a previous wife also accused him of physical abuse. But the players’ association was angered that Boston refused to play him.

The settlement reached by the union and management’s Player Relations Committee, which was still being put in writing Tuesday night, calls for Cordero to meet with doctors selected by both sides in New York today, a management lawyer said.

If those sessions produce a consensus that Cordero is fit to play, the Red Sox would have reinstate the outfielder or trade him, sources said.
