People want their pizza. And they want it now.

That’s the theory behind CPK ASAP, a new fast-service member of the 78-restaurant California Pizza Kitchen chain, scheduled to open July 17 at the Promenade at Westlake in Thousand Oaks.

The restaurant will feature a condensed version of the traditional California Pizza Kitchen menu--a portion of the pizzas and just a few salads, sandwiches and soups.

It is the company’s first full-size ASAP restaurant, with two smaller versions at Los Angeles International Airport.

“The idea is to get you in and out as fast as any competing types of concepts,” said Larry Flax, who co-founded the chain with Rick Rosenfield in 1985.

Flax compared the speed and quality of service to that of a Baja Fresh or Boston Market establishment.

“And I suppose if we get really good,” he said, “we could compete against the McDonald’s of the world.”

Flax said the Thousand Oaks location will help test market the concept, and he expects there will be more ASAPs to follow.

“It’s hard to predict. We’ll have to see what the demand is,” he said. “But this is something that probably will be far more prolific than casual dining could be. We look at this as a major expansion vehicle for the company.”

The Thousand Oaks restaurant will open with nine individual-size pizza selections, ranging from $3.95 to $5.95. The list of toppings includes Thai chicken, garlic chicken and Portobello mushroom. Another nine pizzas will be added shortly after the business is up and running.

There will be 40 seats inside the restaurant and another 20 on an outdoor patio. Chris Ames, general manager of the restaurant, expects the seats to get a good workout.

“I know that the area has been wanting a California Pizza Kitchen for quite some time,” he said.

There are countless reasons why driving up the coast to San Luis Obispo County is a good idea any week. But Sunday through July 13 will provide a little extra incentive to gas up the car and head up the 101 Freeway.

Over the eight-day span, wineries and other public venues from San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Avila Beach, San Simeon and Shell Beach will host a variety of wine-related activities as part of the 13th annual KCBX Central Coast Wine Classic.

Individual events, which will include auctions, a golf tournament, symposiums, wine meals and a barrel tasting, range from $17 to $110. Event packages are priced at $170 to $850 (at which point Ventura County festival-goers may as well hire a chauffeur to handle the driving).

A Zinfandel & Zydeco kick-off party Monday is on the cheaper end of the scale ($17).

Chef Bob Winick, owner of Bon Temps Creole Cafe in San Luis Obispo, will prepare New Orleans-style red beans and rice, blackened chicken and corn bread, all of which will be washed down by a variety of Zinfandels. Area wineries scheduled to participate include Corbett Canyon Vineyards, Silver Horse Vineyards, Pesenti Winery and Adelaida Cellars. The tasting will run from 4 to 7 p.m. at San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza.

The festival will conclude July 13 with a Grand Wine Tasting. About 100 wineries from throughout California and a dozen Central Coast restaurants will be represented. An art and wine auction is also planned. The wine tasting, which will run from 1 to 4 p.m., is $40 general, $20 designated drivers.
