Giants’ Fernandez Out for Season

San Francisco Giant pitcher Osvaldo Fernandez underwent season-ending surgery on his right elbow to remove loose bodies and repair damage to the medial tendon.

The 28-year-old right-hander sat out from May 20th-June 19th and is 3-4 with a 4.95 earned-run average in 11 starts. He was 0-3 in his past six outings, last winning April 27 at Houston.

Montreal Expo first baseman David Segui has been suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount for charging the mound in Florida last Saturday.

Segui charged Marlin pitcher Livan Hernandez after getting hit with a pitch in the fourth inning.

Segui, batting .332, has appealed the ruling, and is eligible to play pending a hearing, which has not been set yet.

The San Diego Padres reinstated infielder Craig Shipley from the disabled list as Jorge Velandia was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas to make room on the roster, the team announced.

Shipley, who made his second trip to the disabled list this season, had been out of action because of a right hip strain since June 8. He started the season on the disabled list because of a left hamstring tear and sat out 34 games.
