Exotic Animals to Visit Museum

A kinkajou will make a rare daytime appearance Saturday at the Santa Paula Union Oil Museum’s Animals in the Park event.

This fuzzy, nocturnal raccoon-like animal from the rain forests of Central and South America will join more than a dozen other exotic animals in a visit to the museum.

The program is part of an animal education series being held in the museum’s courtyard. Museum Director Mike Nelson said the event will be educational for children.

During last year’s visit, he said, children held a 15-foot python while representatives from the Moorpark College Exotic Animal Compound taught them about the reptiles.

“They learn about animals in a way they don’t get to experience in everyday life,” Nelson said.

Instructors and students from the compound will be on hand Saturday to answer questions.

The animal compound, which will provide the animals for the event, is a training facility for college students seeking careers with animals. The 21-month program prepares them for jobs ranging from zookeeping to being a trainer for animals for television and films.

Animals in the Park is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in the museum courtyard, 1001 E. Main St. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
