Renovation Plan Could Give Restaurant New Lease on Life

“You can get anything you want at Alice’s restaurant,” went the 1960s protest song.

Well, almost.

The landmark restaurant on the Malibu Pier, which shares the name of the restaurant in the 1960s tune, had been closed for nonpayment of back rent even before Harry Peacock took over as Malibu city manager three months ago. Peacock said the city is working out a deal to lease the pier--and everything on it--from the state. The city wants to reconstruct the pier and then lease out the restaurant, he said.

The agreement between the city and state has yet to be finalized, and “we can’t lease out the restaurant until we’ve rebuilt the pier,” he said.

Still, he said, since the city’s announcement, he has had four inquiries from individuals interested in taking over the restaurant.

So, when will a restaurant reopen? “Probably in about three years,” he said.
