Borders Debuts for Duluth With Shutout Inning

Ila Borders, the first woman to pitch in a minor league game, gave up one hit in one inning in her first game for the Duluth-Superior Dukes on Friday, a game Madison won, 6-3.

Borders, from Whittier Christian High and Southern California College, came on in the top of the ninth with the Black Wolf leading by three.

She gave up a leadoff single to Kevin Walton, then got Lino Connell to ground into a double play and Nate Vopata to ground out.

Borders lowered her earned-run average to 6.43. It had been 7.50 after seven appearances with the St. Paul Saints, who signed her this spring. She was traded to Duluth June 25.
