Community Center to Dedicate New Building

The long-awaited expanded San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center will be dedicated in a ceremony Saturday.

Donated by Lockheed Corp., the 7,700-square-foot building will provide room for an auditorium, counseling, computers, a lobby and counter area.

In February the building was moved from its former Burbank location--where it was an employee cafeteria--to the community center in Pacoima, bringing to an end an often arduous three-year planning process.

A plaque honoring the first- and second-generation Japanese American pioneers who established the center in 1951 will be unveiled at the dedication ceremony, with several of the original founders expected to attend the event.

The ceremony will begin at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the center, 12953 Branford St.

The center serves 29 organizations and more than 1,000 families. It provides a meeting place for fishing, dancing, senior citizen, youth basketball, Japanese calligraphy and judo groups, among others.
