Robert de la Riva never even exchanged words with his killer the night he was shot while riding in a car on a busy Pasadena roadway.

As detectives investigate the seemingly random June 22 shooting, the victim’s family is appealing for information to solve the murder of the 23-year-old Pasadena resident. De la Riva was shot by a passenger in another car at a traffic light on northbound Arroyo Parkway between California Boulevard and Cordova Street just after 3 a.m.

De la Riva and three friends were returning from a dance club and were joking and laughing among themselves at a traffic light, said Pasadena Police Det. Don Mowery. Suddenly, shots rang out and a bullet flew through De la Riva’s partially open window, striking him in the head and then lodging in his friend’s belt buckle.
