Community College Newspaper Wins 20 Fair Awards

Irvine Valley College’s student newspaper, the Voice, won 20 awards, including five for first place, at the 12th annual Orange County Fair Reporters Contest.

“These awards demonstrate that we demand excellence at IVC,” said Olga Briseno, the newspaper’s advisor. “I am proud that the students’ hard work and commitment paid off for them.”

Student Lillian Reiter won first place in feature writing for a story on organ donors and tied for third place for one on AIDS.

Arts and entertainment editor Tammy E. Livingstone won a first-place award in news for reporting a campus bomb scare and first place in the food and restaurant category for a piece on Thanksgiving turkey. She also placed second in the travel, entertainment and leisure and third in entertainment review.

Angeline Fowler and Kim Baker shared first place in spot news for a co-written article about the resignation of college President Daniel L. Larios. Fowler took second and third for non-breaking news.

Derek Stucker won first and third place for noneditorial cartoon and second and third place for editorial cartoon.

Other winners were Shelly Mitchell, second place for personality profile; Enrico Lubino, second place for noneditorial cartoon; Maria Leggio, third place for photo layout; Wei-Lin Wu, second place for creative graphics story; and Robbie Bulus and Derek Stucker, third place in travel and leisure.

The entries are on display in the Visual Arts Building at the fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive in Costa Mesa, through July 27.
