Jerry De Ainza of Irvine defeated John Kern of Fremont, 6-3, 7-5, to win a third-round match in the men’s 50 division of the National Men’s Hardcourt Tennis Championship at Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals of the 50 division was Dave Bohannon of Garden Grove, who beat Dennis Bowers of Fullerton, 6-0, 6-0.

In the men’s 55 division, Bill Cover of La Quinta beat Gordy Nichol of Wayne, Pa., 6-3, 6-0; Herman Ahlers of Dana Point defeated Bill Simonton of Concord, N.H., 6-3, 6-2, and Mission Viejo’s Jerry Edgar beat Robert Kisner of Huntington Beach, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6.

Hank Woodrome, head pro at Fullerton Golf Course, won the Southern California PGA/Cobra Golf Match Play Championship at Wilshire Country Club.

In the final, Woodrome, 47, rolled in a 10-foot putt for birdie on the 17th hole to defeat Mike Mitchell of Mission Hills, 2 and 1. Woodrome, who received $3,400 for first place, defeated Ron Skayhan of Tamarisk in the semifinals.

Nicholas Bollini of Yorba Linda leads the boys’ 13-14 division of the Junior World Golf Championships after shooting one-under-par 71 in the second round at Mission Trails in San Diego. Bollini leads Matthew Rosenfeld of Dallas by one stroke.

Candie Kung of Fountain Valley is tied for second in the girls’ 15-17 division at Torrey Pines North. Kung and Allie Erlandson of Palm Desert are even, four behind leader Wei Yun-Jye of Taiwan.

Kevin Stadler, son of PGA Tour pro Craig, leads the boys’ 15-17 division.

Pacifica’s Amanda Freed has been named first-team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn.

Freed, a pitcher, went 20-0 with a 0.23 earned-run average and a section-tying five perfect games. She was The Times Orange County player of the year.

Freed’s teammate, third baseman Toni Mascarenas was a second-team selection. She batted .400 with 22 runs batted in and scored 24 runs. Pacifica finished the year ranked No. 1 nationally by the association.

Cypress has hired John Eyman as its track and field coach. He will also be the football team’s defensive coordinator and will teach physical education.

He had been a track coach at Mater Dei, where he also assisted the football program, according to Cypress Athletic Director Rob Walker.
