FRESHWATER

17. CASTAIC LAKE--Nick Joy, Dallas, with guide Gary Harrison, 18 largemouth bass, largest 12-4 and 10-2, on crawdads and plastic worms. Jim Hall, Van Nuys, 12-6 largemouth, on red plastic worm. Warren Griffiths, Canyon Country, 13-1 catfish, while fishing for bass with a plastic worm on lower lake. Freddie Strange, Chatsworth, 12-0 striped bass on an anchovy. Bluegill active on lower lake.

18. LAKE PIRU--Trout are still fairly active, though few limits are being filled. Best bite is at 40 feet near dam, with trolled Needlefish lures the hot ticket. Some bass being caught on night crawlers and crawdads, and some crappie are being taken on mini-jigs fished in the marina area.

19. PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish action fair in marina area and coves, biting on chicken livers and anchovies. Largemouth and smallmouth bass being caught sporadically by those using plastics and crankbaits.

20. LAKE CACHUMA--Catfish bite good at night, biting mainly at east end and narrows. A fair bite mornings and afternoons. Larry McDonald, Palmdale, 25-pound catfish, on mackerel at narrows. Trout bite fair for trollers fishing deep water with Needlefish lures. Some bluegill being caught at east end.

21. LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass fairly active. Largest of week, a 10-2, by Jeremy Smith, Ventura, on a crawdad. Lots of smaller bass biting on surface lures (best on overcast mornings), and hardly biting at all during day. Catfish bite fair to good. Leonard Gibson, Oak View, 21-pound catfish, on mackerel in shallows. Some trout. Tom Thomason, Ventura, four limits in four days, all on silver-black Apex lure in deep water near dam.

22. CORONA LAKE--Some bass and crappie caught in mornings, but the best bet is catfish, which are more active in evenings and afternoons.

23. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Catfish, catfish and more catfish, and nothing else.

24. IRVINE LAKE--A mere 20-pound catfish tops the list this week, we say mere because it pales to the monsters landed during the previous week. Troy Barr of Costa Mesa caught a 20-pounder on liver-flavored Berkley Catfish Power Bait. Largemouth bass still roaming in deep water along the shoreline, and crappie are schooled up at the east shore. Some bluegill.

25. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Evening and night fishermen having little trouble catching limits of catfish, using mackerel and marshmallow-mealworm combos. The fish aren’t big--averaging 1-3 pounds--but they are apparently hungry. Bass fishermen doing fair in evenings, with night crawlers getting most.

26. LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass from 2-3 pounds biting on anchovies in shallows at east end. Some morning surface activity. Largemouth bass in deeper water, biting on plastics and night crawlers, averaging 1-2 pounds. Catfish best bet, biting on most baits, averaging 2-5 pounds.

27. LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass best bet, but the only activity to speak of is in mornings and late afternoons. Bluegill fairly active at dam, biting on crickets and wax worms.

28. BIG BEAR LAKE--Trout bite fair in mornings and afternoons and slow during day. A lot of fish between 2-5 pounds being caught, but a typical day’s catch is two or three pan-size rainbows. Bass biting sporadically on trolled lures. Crappie are hitting mini-jigs in various coves.

28. SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Reservations are being accepted for August fishing at Lake Barrett, one of the most productive bass fisheries in the Southland. Details: (619) 220-8497. Last week, 222 anglers caught and released nearly 2,000 bass. Other productive lakes are Sutherland and--to a lesser extent--El Capitan, Hodges and Otay. A 16-pounder was caught at Miramar. The bluegill bite is still sizzling at San Vicente--more than 7,000 were caught in the past week. The best crappie action is at Hodges.

29. LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout are being caught by those fishing between 6-9 a.m. and 4-8 p.m., and crappie are pretty much being caught all day. There is a fair dry-fly bite for trout in the evenings, with a size 10 olive matuka getting the best results.

31. BISHOP AREA--South Lake and Bishop Creek remain the most productive areas, with nearby North Lake and Lake Sabrina worth a try as well. All are producing limits and an occasional trophy-sized trout. Hot tip: Trails to the back country are finally open and the lakes are ice-free. It’s still like spring up there, scenery-wise and fishing-wise.

32. MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Crowley Lake produced an 8-0 rainbow on a night crawler, and several slightly smaller fish, and lots of limits of much smaller fish. The bite is good for bait fishermen (night crawlers, Power Bait) and trollers (rainbow Rapalas and Needlefish on lead-core line). At Convict Lake, big fish are coming out daily, but they are few and far between. Some limits of smaller trout. At upper Rock Creek, Jeff Irons of Tom’s Place landed a 4-5 rainbow. The entire creek is producing. Rock Creek Lake, Twin Lakes and Lake Mary fair.

33. JUNE LAKE--All lakes on the loop fair to good for trout averaging 1-3 pounds, with the bigger fish coming from Silver and Grant. Rapalas best bet for the bigger fish. Rush Creek fair to good on small spinners and worms.

34. BRIDGEPORT--No best bets. Temperatures in high 80s and low 90s keeping fish sluggish at all lakes and streams, with the best bite taking place after 6 p.m. Some kokanee salmon being caught at Twin Lakes.
