Leichtfried, Duesler Pull Doubles Duty
Bob Duesler of Newport Beach and Hank Leichtfried of Irvine advanced to today’s finals in the men’s 50 and 55 doubles at the U.S. Tennis Assn. National Men’s 50 and 55 hard court championships at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.
Duesler and Leichtfried defeated Ivo Barbic of Atlanta and Bill McClung of Big Canoe, Ga., 6-2, 6-2, in the 55 doubles semifinals Saturday. They will meet Geof Grant of Mill Valley and Gordon Smith of San Anselmo, Calif., who defeated Jim Howie of Dana Point and Jenny Lindborg of Laguna Beach, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in today’s final at 2 p.m.
Duesler and Leichtfried defeated Steve Field and Frank Zebot of Laguna Beach, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the 50 semifinals. They will meet David Bohannon of Garden Grove and Dennis Trout of Solvang, who defeated Robyn Ray and Ken Stuart of Newport Beach, 6-4, 7-6, in today’s final, which follows the 55 doubles final.
Bohannon lost in the 50 singles semifinals to Dick Johnson of Ballwin, Mo., 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Johnson will meet Brian Cheney of Chandler, Ariz., in today’s 50 singles final, which will take place after the 55 singles final between Rob Cadwallader of Memphis and Mervin Watson of Clarkmont, Calif., beginning at 10 a.m.
