Darren Daulton is supposed to have a bad knee and have trouble stepping out of the Philadelphia Phillie dugout.

So will someone explain to the Pittsburgh Pirates why Daulton was able to stretch a hit into a triple and steal a base during Philadelphia’s 4-1 victory over Pittsburgh Sunday.

Daulton, 35, has had nine knee operations.

“That guy is unbelievable. He’s fun to watch,” Philadelphia Manager Terry Francona said.

Proving he still had some speed, Daulton later stole a base, his fourth in four attempts.

Meanwhile, Phillie outfielder Danny Tartabull, who broke a bone in his left foot on opening day, had an MRI exam performed by Dr. Phillip Kwon in Los Angeles and the test results showed the bone is still broken in his foot. He will be examined again Tuesday.

New York Met right-hander Pete Harnisch allowed five runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings in his first rehabilitation start at the triple-A level as his team, the Norfolk (Va.) Tides, lost to the Columbus Clippers, 5-0, at Columbus, Ohio. Harnisch, who hasn’t pitched for the Mets all season because of depression, struck out six and walked three.

Manager Jim Leyland’s five-year contract with the Florida Marlins allows him to leave if the team is sold. But Leyland says he wants to stay. “I’m going to manage this team for the next four years, hopefully,” he said. “If the new owner comes in and doesn’t want Jim Leyland or wants to tear the team apart, it’s one thing. But I don’t want to go anywhere.”
