Plans for Lucky Store Are Dropped

Plans for a Lucky supermarket that drew vehement opposition from local residents in recent months have been scrapped, Ventura city officials announced Monday night.

“We’ve been told that by telephone and the letter is in the mail,” Mayor Jack Tingstrom said during Monday night’s council meeting.

The store was slated for a site on Telegraph Road across from Ventura College, a residential neighborhood already served by three grocery stores.

The 52,298-square-foot store would have been open 24 hours, and would have been the second largest in Ventura.

Neighborhood residents crowded public meetings in May to speak against the proposed supermarket, saying the business would bring noise, traffic and pollution. On May 14, residents delivered petitions with 1,800 signatures to the City Council, showing their displeasure with the proposed supermarket.

“There was too much opposition to it. It was like putting a 16 foot in a 10 shoe,” Tingstrom said. “It was the wrong project for the wrong spot.”

City officials also voiced concerns about the project. Tingstrom said every council member was opposed to the grocery store project.
