City Council Approves Interim Police Chief

Veteran Sierra Madre Police Sgt. Chris Christensen will become the interim police chief in September when Joe Surgent retires from the position, officials said Wednesday.

City Administrator John Davidson said he chose Christensen for the position after meeting with the City Council in closed session Tuesday.

“I think the council and I were looking for an individual who could ensure a continuity with the community and who is actively involved in youth issues. And Chris fits the description,” Davidson said.

Christensen, 58, joined the Sierra Madre Police Department 32 years ago and has served as acting chief, Davidson said.

Davidson said the city will begin to recruit regionally for a new police chief. An appointment is expected by the end of the year.

Surgent announced his retirement last week after less than four years as chief of the 20-member Police Department.
