Head Start Programs Recruit Preschoolers
Head Start, the federally funded, free preschool program, is looking for families with 3- and 4-year-old children to apply.
Low-income children and 4-year-olds receive top priority, but there are spaces for children with special needs, such as cerebral palsy or speech difficulties, even if their families have higher incomes, according to spokeswoman Laurie Dickinson.
Nearly 1,000 children are served at the 16 centers and six home-based groups in Ventura County, she said.
While Head Start programs across the country are being scrapped because of dwindling federal funds, Dickinson said Ventura County’s program is doing well because of money obtained through extra grant writing.
Along with the educational curriculum, children enrolled in Head Start receive hot lunches and health services, such as dental, mental, physical and nutritional care, Dickinson said. Parents are also advised on where to get social services, she said.
Head Start classes meet for 3 1/2 hours in the morning or afternoon. An all-day Head Start class in the Fillmore area is available to children whose parents are working, looking for work or attending school. Transportation is provided for children who live nearby, Dickinson said.
Though the first selection process begins today, Head Start enrollment is ongoing. For an application, call Child Development Resources of Ventura County Inc., at 485-7878, Ext. 515. Applications also may be picked up at 2500 Vineyard Ave. in Oxnard.
