O.C. Surfers Advance at Huntington Beach

Newport Beach surfers Todd Miller and Mark Caffey, Huntington Beach’s Mike Mattison, Barry Deffenbaugh and Mark Moreno joined San Clemente’s Terence McNulty in advancing through the second day of competition Friday at the Katin Team Challenge on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Top seeded surfers, including Lisa Andersen, will join today’s competition, with Sunny Garcia and Kalani Robb, both from Hawaii. Three-time world champion Tom Curren of Santa Barbara also is expected to compete today. Competition is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Erica Sorgi of the Mission Viejo Nadadores placed first (417.20 points) in the girls’ 14-15 one-meter springboard event at the Zone E diving championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Michelle Brown of Crown Valley Divers was third (347.00). The top six divers qualified for nationals.

Also qualifying were Raymond Vincent of the Nadadores, who won the boys’ 14-15 three-meter springboard (426.60). Robbie Quinn, of Crown Valley Divers, was third in the event (369.05).

In the girls 13-and-under platform event, four Nadadores divers qualified: Carly Banks finished second (260.15), Kristin Littell third (256.35), Erica Healey fourth (248.85) and Alyssa Gibson sixth (227.25).

Michael Hilde, diving for the Nadadores, won the boys’ 13-and-under platform event (269.10).

In the boys’ 16-18 platform, Lee Brennan of Crown Valley Divers qualified for nationals with a second-place finish (480.65).

The Orange County Sports Celebrities awarded $1,500 scholarships to Jocelyn Cabuhat (Magnolia), Joanna Evans (Sunny Hills), Jeremy Katz (Foothill), Matthew Payne (Marina), Marissa Perez (Rosary), Eric Saul (La Habra). The students were selected because of their grade-point average, athletic performance, community service and financial need. Receiving the Jim Valentine Courage Award were Cindy Cook (Sonora) and Gloria Fuerte (Santiago).

James Webster of Mission Viejo averaged 11 points and eight rebounds to lead the Southern California All-Stars to the 13-and-under AAU National Basketball Championship on July 6 in Memphis.
