U.S. Marshal Ordered to Respond in McDougal Case

A federal magistrate on Monday ordered the U.S. Marshals Service to respond to an American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit filed on behalf of Susan McDougal that says she is being punished for not cooperating with the Whitewater probe.

U.S. Magistrate Charles Eick gave the Marshals Service 23 days to respond to the habeas corpus complaint filed a week ago.

McDougal says she is being held in solitary confinement in a glass cell at the Twin Towers jail because she refused to cooperate with Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr.

Michael Ramon, U.S. marshal for the Central District of California, denied in a statement last week that he has custody of McDougal.

Ramon said McDougal is in Los Angeles County custody because the district attorney is prosecuting her on charges of swindling $150,000 from ex-Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor Zubin Mehta and his wife, Nancy.
