Kenny Lofton, who had played only one game in the past six weeks because of a groin injury, returned from the disabled list Monday and went two for four and scored twice in Atlanta’s 6-0 victory over Chicago.

To make room for Lofton, the Braves designated third-string catcher Tim Spehr for assignment.

Lofton went on the disabled list after pulling his left groin muscle June 17. He returned for one game July 5, but was forced to take a second stint on the DL.

Lofton, who was hitting .344 with three homers, 33 runs batted in and 19 stolen bases in his first season with the Braves, missed the All-Star game because of the injury.

With the trading deadline Thursday, San Diego reiterated its contention that left fielder Greg Vaughn is not damaged goods.

The Padres would like to acquire a starting pitcher as well as solve their situation in left field, where Rickey Henderson plays ahead of Vaughn.

A July 4 deal that would have sent Vaughn to the New York Yankees was voided by the Yankees, who claimed Vaughn’s throwing shoulder didn’t meet medical standards.

Vaughn sought a second opinion from Dr. Lewis Yocum, who concurred with Padre doctor Jan Fronek that Vaughn is healthy.

Florida rushed Devon White--sidelined since June 7 with a pulled calf muscle--back into the lineup without a rehabilitation assignment, and sent center fielder Mark Kotsay and struggling second baseman Luis Castillo to the minors.
