The city has bought a 3.6-acre parcel on Edinger Avenue near the Irvine city limits for a long-anticipated commuter train stop.

The land, between Jamboree Road and Red Hill Avenue, cost $1.7 million, which the city received in grants from the Orange County Transportation Authority, officials said. The cost of building the station will be financed by state and federal transportation grants.

City officials said they hope the station will be functioning by December 1999.

The property would include a raised platform, awning and parking lot for 300 cars.
