A man attempting to steal a woman’s car by holding her at knifepoint was arrested shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, when police and the woman’s neighbor managed to talk him into surrendering, officials said.

Orrin Dale Hudson, 40, was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of assault, kidnapping and attempted carjacking, police said.

Hudson allegedly grabbed the 21-year-old woman in the parking lot of a condominium complex in the 2500 block of San Clemente Drive and held a 12-inch, serrated butcher knife to her throat, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Darell Freeman said.

The victim’s screams alerted a neighbor, who immediately approached the armed man and tried to calm him, Freeman said.

The neighbor distracted the man while police arrived. When Officer Eric Wisener moved within 15 feet of the suspect, he kept his gun at his side but took over the conversation, urging the man to drop the knife, police said.

Hudson complied and released the victim, who was unharmed, Freeman said.
