5,000 Gallons of Oil Spill From Ship
About 5,000 gallons of oil spilled Wednesday from a ship in Humboldt Bay near Eureka, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The bay was closed to vessels and a containment boom was used to clean up the spilled oil near the Louisiana Pacific Lumber Co. pier, about 4 1/2 miles north of the bay’s entrance.
Coast Guard officials said the oil is believed to have spilled about 5:30 a.m. from a punctured fuel tank on the Panamanian motor vessel Kure.
Oil was spotted as far as a mile south of the spill site.
Officials said the bay may be closed for several days.
