Workshop Brings the Sea to School
They learned that the heart of blue whale can weigh as much as a Volkswagen, that a whale’s blowhole is the equivalent of a human nose and that the rib of a whale is bigger than the average elementary school pupil.
Students at Lincoln School also learned the importance of keeping the ocean and beaches clean during one of several presentations conducted by Sea World in the Redondo Beach Unified School District this week.
During the San Diego marine life park’s workshops, students measured themselves against various whale bones and watched a short film on the difference between toothed and baleen whales.
Educators from the Sea World Outreach program teach students about the ocean in an attempt to make them aware of the environment.
The program has been presented to more than 1.5 million students over the last 17 years and includes lessons about whales, penguins, seals, sea lions and sharks.
