Officials to Visit Portland for Ideas on Artists Village
Two council members and a handful of city staffers will leave for Portland, Ore., today to examine that city’s arts center as a model for Santa Ana’s budding Artists Village.
Director of Community Development Cindy Nelson said city officials will speak with Portland administrators and developers about the city’s successful arts area known as the Pearl District.
The trip will include council members Thomas E. Lutz and Brett Franklin and Artists Village founder Don Cribb.
Four city staff members also will attend, as will two local developers planning a live-work space for artists.
Santa Ana will spend about $4,000 on travel and air fare for the city officials but will not pay the air fare or lodgings for the developers.
Councilman Ted R. Moreno, a frequent opponent of the Artists Village, criticized the council members for bringing their wives, but Franklin noted that the city will not pay any of the expenses for the spouses.
