Marlins’ Hernandez a Soldier in Relief
Rookie starter Livan Hernandez (9-3, 3.18 earned-run average) is the odd man out in the Marlin rotation against the Giants. And he wasn’t pleased with Manager Jim Leyland’s decision.
But Hernandez didn’t pout or sulk, and he came through when the Marlins needed him Wednesday.
Hernandez pitched four strong innings in relief during the Marlins’ 7-6 victory, giving up one run and three hits. He kept the Marlins in the game after starter Al Leiter struggled and was removed after four innings.
“That was definitely one of the keys for us,” Leyland said. “Livan is a tough guy, and he’s said all the right things when people have asked him about the situation. I appreciate that, and I appreciate what he did today.”
