Late Goal Lifts Santa Ana in Men’s Soccer

Nick Purdom’s goal late in the game proved to be the winner as Santa Ana defeated Cypress, 2-1, in Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer Friday at Cypress.

Purdom, a former El Modena High standout, scored in the 75th minute to give Santa Ana a 2-0 lead. Danny Arreguin scored for Cypress 12 minutes later for the final score.

Candido Lopez scored Santa Ana’s first goal in the 54th minute. Santa Ana improves to 10-1, 2-0; Cypress drops to 2-5-1, 0-1-1.

In other conference games:

Fullerton 6, Golden West 1--Brian Treat and Horacio Cedillo scored two goals each to lead host Fullerton (4-7-1, 2-0). Arig Himango scored for Golden West (1-5-4, 0-).

Irvine Valley 0, Orange Coast 0--Ryan Arechederra made seven saves and Carlos Loza stopped three for OC (0-6-4, 0-1-1). Miljan Soskic made four saves for Irvine Valley (9-3-5, 0-0-2).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Cypress 10, Santa Ana 0--Sheri Smith scored four goals for Cypress (11-1-1, 3-0), ranked fourth in state, in its win over host Santa Ana (6-5, 0-2). Cypress has outscored its three conference opponents, 23-0.

Orange Coast 2, Irvine Valley 0--Heather Parsons and Emma Ekblad’s scored for Orange Coast, which remains undefeated in conference at 3-0. Jessica Barr had 13 saves for Irvine Valley (4-6-1, 1-2).

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Rio Hondo 0--Jenny Marsh had 15 kills in the 15-8, 16-14, 15-6 victory for Orange Coast (5-2).

In the Citrus men’s water polo tournament:

Ventura 7, Saddleback 6--Todd Valentine scored three goals in the second-round loss for Saddleback (10-4). In its first-round game, Valentine scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, as Saddleback defeated Los Angeles Valley, 8-7.

In nonconference wrestling:

Cypress 58, Victor Valley 7--Five forfeits by Victor Valley certainly figured in the outcome of this matchup. Jose Marroquin (126 pounds), Ernesto Vargas (167) and heavyweight Ricco Rodriguez won by fall. Rodriguez pinned Victor Valley’s Mike Diadone in 12 seconds.
