Meadows Leads Cougars to Water Polo Title

Capistrano Valley goalkeeper Eric Meadows came up with 13 saves against Bell Gardens in the Cougars’ 7-3 victory in the finals of the Villa Park tournament Saturday.

Meadows, who was also voted tournament MVP, recorded six of those saves when Bell Gardens had a one-man advantage. Ryan Keating (two goals) and Pat McConnell (one goal) made the all-tournament team for sixth-ranked Capistrano Valley.

In another Villa Park water polo tournament match:

No. 9 Santa Margarita 8, No. 8 Villa Park 7--Santa Margarita (13-5) took third place with a win over host Villa Park (9-4). Tyler Wilson scored the winning goal for the Eagles, when he beat Spartans’ goalkeeper Matt Doerr on a four-yard penalty shot.

Justin Kroeze, who scored three goals, and goalkeeper Brett Weiss made the all-tournament team for the Eagles.

In the Brea Olinda boys’ cross-country invitational:

Century wins--Century’s Armando Gomez ran the third best time of the day (16:57) as the Centurions won at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. Century edged second place Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon by 13 seconds.

Paramount’s Marco Chio posted the best time of the day, 16:34. Orange’s Freddy Olmedo had the fifth-best time (17:02).

In the Brea Olinda girls’ cross country invitational:

Brea girls second--Brea Olinda had three girls finish among the top 10, as the Wildcats finished second at Carbon Canyon Regional Park. Brea finished 2:17 behind Glendora St. Lucy’s, which finished in 104:36.

April Matulich had the best time for Brea, finishing fifth in 20:54. Teammates Jenny Thune finished seventh (21:05) and Christie Burdett finished 10th (21:15).
