UC Irvine Edges Pacific in Water Polo

Ryan Williams scored a two-point goal with 12 seconds left in sudden death to lead fourth-ranked UC Irvine over Pacific, 12-10, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo game Saturday at Stockton.

The Anteaters (3-4, 1-1) trailed at halftime, 7-4, but outscored seventh-ranked Pacific, 5-1, in the third quarter. Pacific’s Andrew Ti scored with 42 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, 9-9.

Pacific (1-3, 0-2) scored in the first overtime period, but Irvine’s Robert Allaire scored with 1:10 left to send the game into sudden-death.

Jason Gabarra had three goals for the Anteaters.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Long Beach State 3, Pacific 0--Nique Crump had 12 kills in victory for No. 2 Long Beach State, 15-0, 15-13, 15-2. Misty May of Newport Harbor had 35 assists for the 49ers (13-1, 5-0).

Tanja Dimitrijevic had 22 assists for 11th-ranked Pacific (10-3, 3-1).

UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--UC Santa Barbara (15-1, 4-0), the ninth-ranked team in the nation, defeated UC Irvine, 15-1, 15-7, 15-9. Former Esperanza High School standout Heather Brown had nine kills for the Gauchos.

In Big West Conference men’s cross-country:

UC Santa Barbara 24, UC Irvine 52, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 70, Cal State Fullerton--Jorge Gutierrez, who finished fourth in 25:28.2, was the top finisher for Irvine. UC Santa Barbara runner Ben Flamm (25:02.3) won the 8,000-meter event at UC Santa Barbara’s Lagoon Course.

In Big West Conference women’s cross-country:

UC Irvine 27, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 53, UC Santa Barbara 72, Cal State Fullerton 78--UC Irvine took top honors in the four-way meet at UC Santa Barbara’s Lagoon Course.

The Anteaters took the second, third and fourth places to clinch the victory. Cal State Fullerton’s Sarah MacDougall won the 5,000 meter race in 18:05.6. Christy Villa finished 12 seconds back for second place, followed by Allyson Kulak (18:27.6) and Jamie Blair (18:35.1).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Chapman 5, Menlo 0--Five players scored goals in a nonconference victory for Chapman (8-2-1). The Panthers had 25 shots on goal and held Menlo (4-8) to only four.

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s soccer:

Southern California College 4, Biola 0--Jamie Gardiner scored two goals for SCC (8-4, 3-2). Meggen Fleener and Ganesa Cobb each scored a goal and Robin Landauer had seven saves for the Vanguards.
