3.6 Quake Shakes Mammoth Lakes
A magnitude 3.6 earthquake struck two miles southeast of Mammoth Lakes on Tuesday night, the strongest temblor in a daylong series of 140 small quakes in the volcanic Mammoth region.
No damage or injuries were reported from the 6:24 p.m. jolt.
The area most affected by the shaking was the scene of intensive scientific efforts over the summer to determine if there has been a new intrusion of magma, or molten rock, under part of the Long Valley caldera, a site of recurring volcanism over thousands of years.
There have been thousands of quakes in the area near the intersection of U.S. 395 and California 203 since last spring.
