Attacks on Waterfowl Prompt Signs at TeWinkle

Share

Two more signs will go up at the end of this week in TeWinkle Memorial Park reminding visitors that killing or injuring migratory waterfowl is a federal crime.

A pair of the white-and-black reflective signs were installed earlier this month, paid for by the Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa councils of the National Rifle Assn. The four signs cost about $100.

The posting was prompted by a string of pellet-gun attacks in March that left 12 birds dead and three others wounded. Four local teenagers later were found to be at fault for some of the attacks on the park’s ducks and geese, many of which are tame.

Harming the birds is punishable by a $5,000 fine and up to six months in jail. Placement of the signs in the park was delayed while city officials approved the wording.
