Concordia Women Win Invitational Race

Freshman Tricia Mattson placed second in 18 minutes 49 seconds to lead Concordia to the championship in the women’s race of the Southern California Invitational Saturday afternoon over the 5,000-meter course at Newport Beach’s Back Bay.

Monica Landa of Southern California College edged Mattson by a second to take first overall in 18:48. Concordia edged second-place SCC, 29-30.

In the men’s race, SCC finished first, with Steve Lalim placing second in 27:25 over the 8,000-meter course.

Ricardo Vanezula, running unattached, won the race in 27:11.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Southern California College 1, Concordia 0 (2 OT)--SCC’s David Puerta scored one minute into the second overtime to hand Concordia (3-9, 0-4) its 54th consecutive conference loss. SCC is 7-7, 2-2.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

CS Fullerton 3, UC Irvine 1--LaCretia Smith had 17 kills and Kahea Smith added 16 to lead the Titans to a 15-9, 10-15, 15-3, 15-9 victory. Carolyn Kittell had 53 assists for the Titans (10-9, 3-3).

Larissa Carter had 14 kills for UC Irvine (4-13, 0-6).

In women’s tennis at the Arizona State Fall Classic:

Exon wins in consolation--UC Irvine’s Natalie Exon defeated Sara Arguilla of Long Beach State, 6-3, 6-2, in a consolation match.

Exon lost an earlier match to Pepperdine’s Angela Lawrence, 6-0, 6-1.

Darian Chappell, also of UC Irvine, defeated Pepperdine’s Tiffany Bartolacci, 6-1, 6-0, in another consolation match.
