Museum Seeks Input From Community About Long-Awaited Expansion Plan

Sitting majestically on the oceanfront in a 1912 mansion, the Long Beach Museum of Art has served the public for nearly 50 years.

Now, museum officials are seeking ideas from the community for a long-awaited expansion that will double exhibit space.

“We want to incorporate their thoughts and suggestions into our plans,” said director Hal Nelson.

A community meeting is scheduled Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the museum, 2300 Ocean Blvd.

Expansion plans call for a carriage house adjacent to the museum being moved to the parking lot on the east side of the main building to make room for a two-story, 12,000-square-foot set of galleries and meeting areas, Nelson said.

In addition, a new parking lot is planned to help ease neighborhood congestion and increase safety by reducing the number of people forced to cross Ocean Boulevard to get to the museum, he said.
