No. 2 Dana Hills Defeats Mater Dei in Tennis

Dana Hills, ranked second in Orange County, won eight of nine doubles sets and defeated sixth-ranked Mater Dei, 14-4, in a South Coast League girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Mater Dei.

Amy Tranckino and Brook Calton swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, and Kate Romm and Isis Jackson won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, for the visiting Dolphins (12-1, 3-0 in league).

Melissa Esmero swept in singles, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, for the Monarchs (8-4, 2-1).

In another South Coast League match:

No. 8 Capistrano Valley 18, Trabuco Hills 0--Jenny Bailey and Leigh Ann Merryman both swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and both improved to 25-5 for Capistrano Valley (8-3, 1-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

No. 9 Garden Grove 15, Los Amigos 3--Vi Ngo upset Veronica Sommer, the defending league champion, 7-6, and won her other two sets, 6-4, 6-0, for Garden Grove (11-1, 7-0).

In the Sea View League:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 16, El Toro 2--Corona del Mar (11-0, 3-0) did not lose a game in singles.

No. 3 Woodbridge 18, Santa Margarita 0--Susanna Lingman and Natasha Toto swept in doubles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, for Woodbridge (7-3, 2-1).

No. 5 Newport Harbor 16, Irvine 2--The doubles team of Chelsea Godbey and Sarah Barker won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, for Newport Harbor (12-3, 3-1).

In the Sunset League:

No. 7 Los Alamitos 16, Edison 2--Sala Satele swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Los Alamitos (6-4, 4-0).

In Academy League boys’ cross-country:

St. Margaret’s 15, Capistrano Valley Christian 50--Ryan Downey ran a course record of 15 minutes 57 seconds over 2.9 miles at Salt Creek for St. Margaret’s, which also defeated Southern California Christian, 15-50.

In the Freeway League:

Sunny Hills 3, Sonora 2--Sunny Nicholas had 20 kills for Sunny Hills (6-3, 3-0), which won, 8-15, 15-1, 9-15, 15-13, 15-7.

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 3, Bolsa Grande 2--Toria Auelua had 15 kills for Pacifica (6-1, 6-0), which rallied for a 15-5, 12-15, 14-16, 17-15, 15-7 victory. Debbie Baeder had 26 kills for Bolsa Grande (5-4, 3-3).

In the Sea View League:

No. 3 Newport Harbor 3, Irvine 0--Jennifer Carey had 38 assists, four blocks and four kills for Newport Harbor (6-1, 3-0), which won, 15-10, 17-15, 15-10.

No. 8 Santa Margarita 3, Woodbridge 0--Suzanne Sarkees had 11 digs for the Eagles (7-2, 2-1), who won, 15-7, 15-6, 15-2.

In the South Coast League:

No. 10 Capistrano Valley 3, Trabuco Hills 2--Capistrano Valley (7-2, 2-1) rallied to win, 12-15, 15-1, 16-14, 11-15, 15-9. Amy Congo had 21 kills for Trabuco Hills (6-2, 1-2).

In the Sunset League:

No. 2 Marina 3, Los Alamitos 0--Lindsay Phillips had 14 kills for Marina (7-1, 3-0), which won, 15-2, 15-6, 15-8.

No. 4 Huntington Beach 3, Esperanza 1--Lauren Wilson had 11 kills for Huntington Beach (8-1, 2-1), which won, 10-15, 15-9, 16-14, 15-8.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 20, Pacifica 7--Jeff Colton scored six goals for Garden Grove (12-3, 2-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 9, Western 2--Corey Bush and Matt Flesher each scored three goals for Brea Olinda (9-7, 4-0), ranked second in Division VI.

In nonleague water polo:

No. 2 San Clemente 19, Servite 10--Jordan Hewko scored four of his six goals in the second half for San Clemente (9-4), ranked fifth in Division I. Michael Kim scored five goals for Servite (7-8), ranked sixth in Division II.

Katella 9, Estancia 6--Jeremy Janton scored four of his six goals in the first half to help Katella (7-7) build a three-goal lead. Brad Wayman scored five goals for Estancia (11-5).
