Tom Barrasso, limited to five games last season because of a shoulder injury, was at his best in his sixth start this fall.

The Pittsburgh Penguin goalie made 36 saves--22 in the second period--for his 24th shutout as the Penguins beat the New York Rangers, 1-0, Tuesday night at New York.

“There are nights when you find the puck in traffic,” said Barrasso, who improved to 3-2-1 and dropped his goal-against average to 1.98. “Sometimes you look the other way and you don’t see it. I was fortunate.”

The Rangers lost their first game of the season after one victory and four ties. The Penguins evened their record at 3-3-1.

In the second period, Barrasso stopped seven shots by Ranger defenseman Brian Leetch and three each by Pat LaFontaine and Kevin Stevens.

“We had opportunities and chances and Barrasso made some big saves,” the Rangers’ Wayne Gretzky said. “We had 22 shots in one period and kept peppering him. He was making key saves.”

Ron Francis scored the only goal at 17:56 of the second period. Francis redirected Kevin Hatcher’s shot from the right point past goalie Mike Richter for the forward’s third goal of the season.

The Rangers pressed the play in the third period, but the Penguins went into a defensive shell and Barrasso was up to the task, making key saves on Gretzky, Alex Kovalev and Adam Graves.

Dallas 5, Calgary 4--Dave Reid’s goal with 3:43 left in overtime gave the Stars a comeback victory over the Flames at Dallas.

Theoren Fleury put Calgary in front, 4-3, late in the second period.

Detroit 3, Toronto 2--Brent Gilchrist scored two goals and Niklas Lidstrom had a goal and an assist as the Red Wings remained undefeated with a victory at Toronto.

Backup goalie Kevin Hodson made 30 saves for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who improved to 5-0-1. Coach Scotty Bowman rested first-string goalie Chris Osgood.
