Chris Hanks plays for a small school but continues to put up huge numbers for Cathedral’s football team.

Hanks, 6 feet and 180 pounds, rushed for a school-record 354 yards in only nine carries and scored six touchdowns in the Phantoms’ 52-6 Santa Fe League victory over Bellarmine-Jefferson last Saturday.

Hanks has gained 1,182 yards and scored 17 touchdowns this season for the Phantoms (4-1), who will play unbeaten La Salle (5-0) on Saturday.

After his team’s game against Cathedral, La Salle Coach Lew Stueck will be part of the halftime ceremony at Saturday night’s Del Rey League game between Loyola and St. Paul at Glendale High.

Loyola is honoring its 1962 Southern Section championship team, which was coached by Stueck and featured current Loyola Coach Steve Grady at quarterback.

La Verne Lutheran has canceled the remainder of its football schedule because the 0-5 Trojans were down to 10 players.

“We had as many as 22 players when we started but we’ve been riddled with injuries,” Athletic Director Mike Miller said. “We were down to eight freshman linemen and two running backs. Hopefully, we’ll be able to pull it back together and be back next year.”

Paul Larson, a defensive end at Buena High in Ventura, has made a near-complete recovery from a stroke he suffered 11 days ago and has been discharged from UCLA Medical Center.

Larson shows no signs of the paralysis to the left side of his body he exhibited after collapsing while working at a Ventura entertainment center Oct. 4.

Doctors said a blood clot in the carotid artery in Larson’s neck cut off flow to the middle cerebral artery in his brain, causing the stroke. The artery apparently was torn during a game Sept. 26, but at the time the only symptom of the injury was a slightly sore neck.
