The college basketball season doesn’t start until November, but three Southland teams will get the jump on the competition with “Midnight Madness” practices tonight.

Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and Cal State Fullerton all have midnight workouts planned to take advantage of the first official day of practice Saturday.

Pepperdine’s eagerness to get started is understandable. After three consecutive losing seasons, including a 6-21 record last season, the Waves have been tabbed one of favorites in the West Coast Conference thanks to an influx of players who sat out last season.

Lorenzo Romar, beginning his second season as Pepperdine coach, welcomes the reinforcements as well as the added pressure.

“For there to be high expectations at Pepperdine after what happened the last three years, you have to be excited,” Romar said.

Pepperdine’s celebration begins at 10 tonight at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu and will feature an intrasquad scrimmage and a dunk contest.

In addition, two Pepperdine students will have the opportunity to win a year of tuition ($21,100 for a full-time undergraduate) by making a half-court shot.
