THE LOCALS
OREGON STATE (3-2, 0-2) at No. 17 UCLA (4-2, 2-1)
* KICKOFF: 3:30 p.m., Channel 9.
* STORYLINE: Oregon State, undergoing a renaissance under Coach Mike Riley, won its last road game in the Rose Bowl in 1994. UCLA is enjoying its first four-game winning streak since 1995, and if it can win this week and against California next week it will qualify for its first bowl game under Bob Toledo.
* OREGON STATE UPDATE: Oregon State will be without its best running back, DeShawn Williams, and its quarterback and main offensive threat, Tim Alexander, who injured his wrist a week ago and ended up playing receiver.
* UCLA UPDATE: The Bruins are averaging 44.8 points, fourth in the nation. They are banged up--they might be without running back Skip Hicks and might have deep threat Jim McElroy for only limited service, but they are coming off a come-from-behind victory against Oregon that has given their confidence--already pretty high--a boost.
* EDGE TO UCLA: UCLA’s defense tends to make teams beat themselves with turnovers, and the offense has proved opportunistic.
* THE LINE: UCLA by 22.
