Second-Half Power Surge Stops Reign
Natalie Williams scored a game-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Portland Power defeated the Seattle Reign, 65-45, Thursday night in the teams’ season-opening game of the American Basketball League’s second season at Portland, Ore.
Portland led, 22-20, at halftime, but the Power went on an 11-4 run in the second half as Williams scored six of her total. The former UCLA star had two consecutive layups, the second giving Portland a 33-24 margin with seven minutes left in the third period.
Williams scored 12 points in the third quarter.
Shalonda Enis led Seattle with 11 points and Kate Starbird had nine points.
Elaine Powell added 12 points and Katy Steding 11 for the Power, which built a 51-36 lead on an 8-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Powell had six points in the period, including a layup and two free throws in the opening burst.
The Power made 15 of 26 shots in the second half and finished 23 of 52. Seattle made only 15 of 47 shots.
Powell added seven rebounds for Portland.
