The Council on American-Islamic Relations applauded a publisher’s decision to recall a children’s book about Muslim holidays after complaints that it is inaccurate and offensive.

“Young readers need accurate information upon which to base their judgments about a faith or culture,” said Nihad Awad, the council’s executive director.

Capstone Press decided to recall the book after the council complained it had inaccurate and offensive information about Islam and Muslim culture.

The Washington-based council cited several examples from the book--”Muslim Holidays” by Faith Winchester--that it said were inaccurate. Two involved folk tales that the council said were not Muslim or Islamic beliefs.
