No. 4 Stanford Rallies to Beat No. 5 UC Irvine in Water Polo

Fourth-ranked Stanford rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat No. 5 UC Irvine, 6-5, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo Friday at Stanford.

Former Tustin High standout Mike Foley of UC Irvine scored the game’s first two goals, before Stanford (9-3, 3-1) scored six consecutive goals. Layne Beaubien and Arturo Rodelo each scored two goals for the Cardinal.

Foley added his third goal with 1 minute 58 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Chris Aguilera had 11 saves for Stanford and Tom Davis had eight for UC Irvine (4-6, 1-2).

In nonconference men’s soccer:

UC San Diego 2, Chapman 0--Cameron Adams and Anthony Funicello each scored goals in the first half for UC San Diego (9-2-2).

After Funicello’s goal on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute, the game got ugly with nine yellow cards called, six on the Panthers (10-4-1). Two Chapman players, Eddie Ferrer and Marco Inga, were ejected in the 73rd minute after their second yellow cards.

In Big West Conference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 4, Utah State 1--Nicole Bucciarelli scored two second-half goals for the Anteaters (10-6, 3-2), who had a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal by Danica Holt. Stephanie Rigamat also scored in the second half for UC Irvine.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

UC San Diego 1, Chapman 0--Cindy Dostalek scored in the 42nd minute for UC San Diego (12-1), the top-ranked team in Division III. Chapman (10-3-1), ranked third in the West Region, was outshot, 18-6.

In the UC Irvine Blue and Gold women’s tennis invitational:

Chappell advances--Freshman Darian Chappell advanced to the final after her semifinal opponent, Tulsa’s Anousjke Van Exel, defaulted. Van Exel and teammate Jennifer DeSpain both defaulted their semifinal matches to compete as a double’s team in the Riviera All-America Tournament at Pacific Palisades.

Chappell will face Tulsa’s Monica Poveda in the final, which will be played today at 10 a.m. instead of Sunday as originally scheduled.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

Boise State 3, UC Irvine 2--The Anteaters came just short of knocking off the Eastern Division leader as Boise State held on, 14-16, 15-11, 8-15, 15-11, 15-11. Freshman Brooke Witt had 28 kills for UC Irvine (5-14, 0-7).

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

UC San Diego 3, Chapman 1--Dana Salter had nine of her 15 kills in the fourth game for San Diego, top ranked in the Division III West Region. Erika Rinset had 14 kills for No. 2 Chapman.
