Running back Tramel Robinson and quarterback Archie Lappin led the charge as Santa Ana flattened Golden West, 56-14, in a Mission Conference Central Division football game Saturday at Santa Ana Stadium.

Robinson, a sophomore, rushed for four touchdowns and 187 yards in 21 carries. He benefited as much from his speed as Golden West’s poor tackling.

Lappin, a freshman, completed 13 of 17 passes for 138 yards, one touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 60 yards in eight carries.

The victory was the second in a row for Santa Ana (2-3 overall, 2-0 conference), which had opened with three consecutive losses.

Maturity was the reason Coach Dave Ogas gave for his team’s turnaround. “It just took us that long to get the right people in the right places.”

And Robinson always seemed to be in right place, especially on third and 15 when the game was still close in the second quarter. Stanley Villanueva had come in to replace Lappin, who left the game after being knocked hard as he attempted a pass.

Robinson got the ball on a draw and slipped through two tackles in the back field. He then broke to the left sideline and was finally stopped at the Golden West 28 after a 47-yard gain.

Three plays later, Byron Schley scored from 14 yards to give Santa Ana a 28-7 lead with 9 minutes 17 seconds left in the half.

Robinson scored on a 20-yard run on Santa Ana’s first possession and reached the end zone from one yard on the Dons’ second possession.

Robinson added touchdown runs of three and 18 yards during Santa Ana’s 21-point third quarter, which gave them a 49-14 lead.

The other touchdown in the quarter came when Santa Ana linebacker Jake Ehlen intercepted a pass in the Golden West end zone. A hit by blitzing defensive back Cody Miller knocked the ball loose just as quarterback John Frank was stepping around pressure to throw.

Golden West is 1-4, 0-2.
