Jackson Leads Bus Tour to Fuel Opposition Against Prop. 209
A bus carrying a coalition led by the Rev. Jesse Jackson on Monday rolled into South-Central Los Angeles, part of a statewide tour designed to build political opposition to Proposition 209, which outlawed state government affirmative action programs.
At a news conference at the Brotherhood Crusade, Jackson spoke of his “Save the Dream Freedom Bus Tour” that will culminate with a march and rally next Monday in Sacramento.
“Today, Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream of a society based on inclusion rather than exclusion is under siege in California,” said Jackson, who began the tour Sunday in San Diego. “We need to save the dream of an America as one big tent where all people live with equal protection, equal opportunity and with compassion for the less fortunate, but [Proposition] 209 will topple the bridges we have built.”
The theme of the tour and march is “Selma 1965 to Sacramento, Oct. 27, 1997: Education, Jobs, Health Care, Tribal Sovereignty, Equal Opportunity for All.”
The bus tours moves on today to Cal State Fresno, and will include stops at Stanford and UC Berkeley before heading to the state capital.
