Rangers Use Burst to End Losing Streak

Niklas Sundstrom and Jeff Finley scored 53 seconds apart in the second period Monday night at New York as the Rangers ended a losing streak at three games with a 4-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Rangers were trailing, 2-1, when Sundstrom scored his second goal of the season 36 seconds into the period. Finley followed at 1:29 with his first goal of the year, a shot from the left point after getting puck off a faceoff from Pat LaFontaine.

Brian Leetch made it 3-1 on the power play at 7:31. Jeff Brown pulled Carolina to 3-2 at 16:08 of the second period, but Kevin Stevens put the Rangers up, 4-2, with a power-play goal at 7:17 of the third period when he one-timed a pass from Alexander Karpovtsev past goaltender Sean Burke.

Carolina’s Enrico Ciccone received a double-minor for slashing Wayne Gretzky, and then got a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct for protesting the call.

Detroit 3, St. Louis 3--Steve Yzerman scored his second goal of the game with 3:06 remaining in regulation as the Red Wings earned a tie at Detroit, ending the Blues’ seven-game winning streak.

St. Louis’ Grant Fuhr and Detroit’s Chris Osgood were strong in goal, with Fuhr making 25 saves and Osgood 24.
